Chapter 17

The time had arrived. Fergus stood by the creek as pride, mingled with excitement, rolled around his chest. A gentle breeze and a blue sky with white puffy clouds that covered the town on the morning of his house-raising seemed to add a special blessing on the day.

Fergus was more thankful than he could say when the parson’s wife had offered to arrange for the women in town to bring a meal for everyone. The lumber and supplies had been delivered two days before. Everything was ready to begin.

The only thing he wondered about—maybe worried about—was Audrey. They hadn’t spoken more than passing greetings since that night. In his mind, that was how he always thought about it—that night. The dreams he’d had lately had been about those kisses. He wondered what her dreams had been about.

He lowered his hand and rubbed Camp’s head. The dog whimpered, begging for more.

Kerr joined him and looked over the area. “How big is this house going to be?”

Fergus felt a bit of heat hit his cheeks. “Well, when I first planned on doing this by myself, I thought it would only be a couple of rooms—a main one with a bedroom over it. Then later, I could add more rooms. I’d seen plans for something like that one time.” He shrugged. “But with help, I decided to do it all at once.”

They moved around as people walked from town and wagons pulled up from surrounding farms. Miz Pauline, the parson’s wife, directed the women where to put the food. Soon the sawing, hammering, quilting, and visiting began.

Fergus kept an eye out for Audrey and let out a sigh of relief when he saw her arriving with Lucy and her children. Maybe, he could get her away for a few minutes and talk with her. Hopefully, they could patch up things. He missed seeing her, talking to her, just simply being with her.

He left the men and met Audrey and Lucy as the children ran off to play with their friends.

“Thank you for coming.” He meant to include both of the women, but he couldn’t take his eyes off Audrey. Lucy took their baskets, said something about locating where the food was being laid out and moved away.

“The whole town seems to want to help.” Her eyes didn’t quite meet his.

“We need to talk. There’re things I need you to understand.” He held his breath. Would she understand that she was so important to him? That he needed her, even if he couldn’t explain everything?

“All right.”

He let out the breath he was holding, but before he could say anything else, several men called out to him. This was his house they were helping him to build. He had to see what they needed.

She smiled. “Go on. I’ll see you later.”

A weight the size of his anvil lifted from his chest, and he returned the smile. “Thank you.”
