Chapter 17
The time had arrived. Fergus stood by the creek as pride, mingled with excitement, rolled around his chest. A gentle breeze and a blue sky with white puffy clouds that covered the town on the morning of his house-raising seemed to add a special blessing on the day.
Fergus was more thankful than he could say when the parsonâs wife had offered to arrange for the women in town to bring a meal for everyone. The lumber and supplies had been delivered two days before. Everything was ready to begin.
The only thing he wondered aboutâmaybe worried aboutâwas Audrey. They hadnât spoken more than passing greetings since that night. In his mind, that was how he always thought about itâthat night. The dreams heâd had lately had been about those kisses. He wondered what her dreams had been about.
He lowered his hand and rubbed Campâs head. The dog whimpered, begging for more.
Kerr joined him and looked over the area. âHow big is this house going to be?â
Fergus felt a bit of heat hit his cheeks. âWell, when I first planned on doing this by myself, I thought it would only be a couple of roomsâa main one with a bedroom over it. Then later, I could add more rooms. Iâd seen plans for something like that one time.â He shrugged. âBut with help, I decided to do it all at once.â
They moved around as people walked from town and wagons pulled up from surrounding farms. Miz Pauline, the parsonâs wife, directed the women where to put the food. Soon the sawing, hammering, quilting, and visiting began.
Fergus kept an eye out for Audrey and let out a sigh of relief when he saw her arriving with Lucy and her children. Maybe, he could get her away for a few minutes and talk with her. Hopefully, they could patch up things. He missed seeing her, talking to her, just simply being with her.
He left the men and met Audrey and Lucy as the children ran off to play with their friends.
âThank you for coming.â He meant to include both of the women, but he couldnât take his eyes off Audrey. Lucy took their baskets, said something about locating where the food was being laid out and moved away.
âThe whole town seems to want to help.â Her eyes didnât quite meet his.
âWe need to talk. Thereâre things I need you to understand.â He held his breath. Would she understand that she was so important to him? That he needed her, even if he couldnât explain everything?
âAll right.â
He let out the breath he was holding, but before he could say anything else, several men called out to him. This was his house they were helping him to build. He had to see what they needed.
She smiled. âGo on. Iâll see you later.â
A weight the size of his anvil lifted from his chest, and he returned the smile. âThank you.â
